Nemours Children’s Hospital Location
In June 2008, Nemours finalized its acquisition of 60 acres of land in the heart of Lake Nona’s medical city, on which it will build a top-tier pediatric health care facility – anchored by a children’s hospital. Located at the intersection of Nemours Parkway and Lake Nona Boulevard, the Nemours Children’s Hospital will have optimal access to major roadways including State Road 528 and State Road 417.
Paving the way to begin construction expeditiously, Nemours recently selected Skanska USA Building Company, Inc. as construction manager to oversee the building process for its pediatric system, including the 95-bed hospital. The firm was specifically selected for its outstanding capabilities and experience in health care construction. Also of importance is its proven track record with the US Green Building Council’s Leadership in LEED® certification.
Not only will the hospital be patient and family-friendly, it will incorporate high performance, environmentally friendly and sustainable design concepts into the hospital so that the facility can achieve US Green Building Council’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) certification.
Nemours is devoted to the holistic approach to medical care. At the Nemours Children’s Hospital, patients and families will have access to outdoor, family-friendly features including healing gardens with nature trails, an amphitheater and educational features for play and learning. Nemours has selected Glatting Jackson Kercher Anglin, a highly regarded landscaping company in Orlando, to oversee design development and the grounds of the Nemours Children’s Hospital.
“We have a tremendous team of firms and individuals with incredible capabilities in pediatric care that are working together to create a pediatric health care experience unlike any other,” says Jeffrey E. Green, Nemours vice president and chief administrative officer, who also serves as the Nemours Children’s Hospital design team project executive.
Some design ideas suggest that Nemours Children’s Hospital will be designed with the comforts of home in mind. Patient rooms will include full bathroom and laundry facilities with large expanses of natural light. Built-in amenities for patients, families and medical staff include warm, open waiting areas, a color-coded wayfinding system and a clinical concierge’s desk. In addition, equal design consideration will be given to teaching and learning areas for staff.
Nemours is currently involved in planning and designing its integrated pediatric health system and plans to break ground on the project in 2009, allowing enough time for the organization to comfortably fulfill its Certificate of Need (CON) requirements to the state. The Nemours Children’s Hospital plans to open its doors to children and families in 2012.
