Our Journey

Our journey began in 1936 with the formation of The Nemours Foundation under the terms of Alfred I. duPont’s will.  Soon after, in 1940, the Alfred I. duPont Institute, a pediatric orthopedic hospital in Wilmington, Delaware, opened its doors.  Today, Nemours has grown to become one of the nation’s largest integrated pediatric health systems, providing hospital and clinic-based specialty care, primary care, prevention and health information services, and research and medical education programs aimed to improve the lives of children and families.

In July 2005, Nemours announced its plans to bring an independent, fully endowed children’s health system to Florida in Orlando.  With an overwhelmingly positive response of support from the community, Nemours received approval on its Certificates of Need in February 2008 to move forward with its plans.  Nemours broke ground on the Nemours Children’s Hospital in February of 2009 and is expected to complete construction in 2012.
